Learn more about how to trace and monitor your network traffic
QoS monitoring – Do away with delays
PRTG comes with several QoS sensors which are perfect for quality of service monitoring. With these sensors, you will discover when (and why) delays and disruptions occur in your VoIP. Other QoS-related topics include jitter monitoring and the analysis of packet loss.
IP SLA monitoring
PRTG comes with special sensors for Cisco devices. With IP SLA monitoring, evaluating the quality of service of your Cisco routers and switches is easy.
CPU monitoring
When processors are overloaded, the entire network is brought to its knees. PRTG lets you monitor the CPUs of servers, routers, and switches. In the event of bottlenecks, you’ll be notified at once.
What is a sensor? In PRTG, “Sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
TRACEROUTER HOP COUNT SENSOR
The Traceroute Hop Count Sensor measures the time and number of hops a data packet needs to reach its destination. It therefore helps you gauge the stability of your network. This sensor can also sound the alarm if a data packet’s route changes.
Packet Sniffer Sensor
PACKET SNIFFER SENSOR
The Packet Sniffer Sensor is a vital sensor for tracing network traffic. It displays the amount of bandwidth needed for connections and applications such as web, mail, and FTP traffic, as well as the origin and destination of data. More on packet sniffing.
NetFlow sensors
NETFLOW SENSORS
IPFIX Sensor, NetFlow V5/V9, or jFlow and sFlow: PRTG comes with Flow sensors that monitor devices from Cisco, as well as other manufacturers which support Flow technology. This sensor also displays the connections and applications that use the most bandwidth. More on NetFlow monitoring and IPFIX monitoring.
SNMP sensors
SNMP SENSORS
PRTG comes with dozens of SNMP sensors which allow you to monitor your data traffic and hardware. For when it comes to bandwidth or network traffic issues, the problem can also lie in your hardware. More on SNMP monitoring.
Network traffic: Monitoring vs. recording
NETWORK TRAFFIC MONITORING:
PRTG is a network monitoring tool that allows you to monitor your traffic as well as the status of your hardware and applications. PRTG provides you with a constant overview.
NETWORK TRAFFIC RECORDING:
If you specifically wish to record your traffic and have a look at individual data packets, then you will need another type of software. There are many such tools on the market.
